A STADIUM'S WALKABILITY: Using Google Maps, I look at each stadium's walkability and locale
Walkability is something that's important to a stadium. There has to be activity around the stadium for fans to do before and after games. A few stadiums have excellent walkability, while others are terrible. I'll analyze each stadium using Google Maps, as I haven't been to many of these places, and I'd appreciate input from you guys about other things from each stadium that add to the walkability of a stadium.
HONDA CENTER (ANAHEIM): The area around Ponda seems a little low-key. There's several microbreweries and restaurants, but they seem to be more towards the baseball stadium or on the other side of the river. Walkability seems a little limited in this regard, especially since there's a train station directly serving the stadium.
GILA RIVER ARENA (ARIZONA): Okay, this stadium gets a lot of shit for how remote it is, but it has an entertainment plaza with lots of activity right in front of the stadium, similar to LA Live. Is this plaza any fun? It looks like fun on gamedays.
TD GARDEN (BOSTON): I'm not familiar with Boston, but the stadium is surrounded by highway ramps. That being said, there seems to be a lot of action directly outside the stadium. Great for some quality gameday grub. It's all close together too in concentric avenues in a triangle-shaped block. Really spiffy.
KEYBANK CENTER (BUFFALO): Parking lots, a casino, a couple restaurants, and a huge marina. Oh, and there's a minor league ballpark. I don't know much about Buffalo, but there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of action. Maybe there's more than what's being presented?
SADDLEDOME (CALGARY): Served directly by rail, the Saddledome appears to be a part of the Stampede fairgrounds complex. But the Stampede is after hockey season, so aside from the museum and some country-western bars, what's there to do come gametime?
PNC ARENA (CAROLINA): .......I'm not seeing anything. There's a college football stadium, a high school football field, a large horse stable, and a tiny bistro. Help me out here. This looks really really sad.
UNITED CENTER (CHICAGO): The action seems to be several blocks away in Greektown. This part of Chicago doesn't really have the best reputation, so I'm not sure if I wanna be in this area after dark, especially since there's nothing directly outside the stadium. Walkability is pretty iffy.
PEPSI CENTER (COLORADO) There's a freakin' amusement park! Doesn't look too big but it looks like it could be fun. The stadium is also next to where the Broncos play. Doesn't seem to be a whole lot of restaurants, but there's two restaurants called Brooklyns, wonder if they're any good?
NATIONWIDE ARENA (COLUMBUS): I do believe this stadium is the crown jewel of Columbus' walkable urbanism. There's a lot to do around the stadium! Bars, restaurants, shops all within an arm's reach! This is what an NHL stadium should have. Bravo!
AMERICAN AIRLINES CENTER (DALLAS): There's a plaza thingy right outside the stadium, which is neat, also there's a lot of bars and stuff a couple blocks up from the stadium. It looks very encouraging.
LITTLE CAESARS ARENA (DETROIT): I know this stadium, along with Comerica Park and Ford Field, are supposed to be catalysts to revitalize Detroit's downtown. There are tons of restaurants and bars, even a casino, and it looks like a lot of fun. I beg the question...how safe is Downtown Detroit?
ROGERS PLACE (EDMONTON): Your gaudy airplane-hangar-of-a-stadium is right in downtown, with lots of things to do all within an arm's reach of the stadium. I love how part of the stadium has a skyway over the street. A vast improvement over your old stadium, which doesn't have anything of note.
BB&T CENTER (FLORIDA): There's a large outlet mall, an IKEA, and a boulevard full of chain restaurants. Not easily accessible by public transport. Pathetic. Next!
STAPLES CENTER (LOS ANGELES): LA Live is the shit! A great place to hang out on gamedays. Lots of activities and fun to be had. Served by the LA Metro. They really knocked it out of the park here. This is peak walkability.
XCEL ENERGY CENTER (MINNESOTA): Located in St. Paul, Minneapolis' more cultured, preppy, bougie older brother. There's a neat little park area and a lot of bars and eateries along 7th Street. Looks like a fun stadium to be around. St. Paul looks bloody beautiful and the stadium is in a great location.
CENTRE BELL (MONTREAL): Well, it's Montreal, famous for its food and nightlife, and the stadium location seems to be within a stone's throw of it all. Nothing really to complain about, looks like a lot of fun.
BRIDGESTONE ARENA (NASHVILLE): Well, this doesn't disappoint. Museums, legendary music venues, plenty of bars and restaurants, and the stadium is close to it all. The stadium really set out to be part of the Music City and god damn I am envious on how great the walkability is. A+, I truly am envious.
PRUDENTIAL CENTER (NEW JERSEY): There's a few bougie breweries, some chain restaurants, a famous deli nearby, and a Planned Parenthood. It's fucking Newark. I value my life dearly. Sorry.
BARCLAYS CENTER (NY ISLANDERS): A crown jewel of gentrification. This stadium doesn't look like it belongs in the neighborhood, like it was tacked on haphazardly. I mean, there's a lot of bars and restaurants, but how many are there as a result of Brooklyn's ongoing gentrification? I look at this one rather carefully, as it feels rather inauthentic. Sorry Isles fans, I hope your stadium issue gets fixed soon.
MADISON SQUARE GARDEN (NY RANGERS): It's a stadium in Manhattan that sits on top of a train station. It's had peak walkability since it was built, although I can imagine Manhattan can be quite expensive. Literally anything and everything is surrounding the stadium. Words simply can't do it justice.
CANADIAN TIRE CENTRE (OTTAWA): An outlet strip mall and a Costco. Fucking what. Next!
WELLS FARGO CENTER (PHILADELPHIA): I understand South Philly isn't the safest of neighborhoods, but that parking lot is massive. There's a building called Xfinity Live that's supposed to be a hub for all three stadiums, with entertainment options. What is there exactly?
PPG PAINTS ARENA (PITTSBURGH): It's next to a college campus, but the fun stuff outside of the stadium seems to be in Downtown a couple blocks down. Doesn't seem like a bad time.
ENTERPRISE CENTER (ST. LOUIS): Considering it's downtown, you have to walk a few blocks to get to the fun part of town, but it doesn't seem too bad. I can't really see a whole lot, so help me out please?
SAP CENTER (SAN JOSE): I don't think they had walkability in mind when they built the Tank. Everything is very spread out, I mean there looks like to be good stuff but you have to drive several blocks down to get to anything. This stadium would really benefit from a BART extension.
AMALIE ARENA (TAMPA BAY): I'm gonna hate saying this because they're a rival team, but I fucking LOVE Tampa's Channelside neighborhood. Friendly atmosphere, lots of good times to be had, and it's peak Florida fun. This was a great place to put a stadium, it's no mystery how the Bolts packs the house every night, win or lose.
SCOTIABANK ARENA (TORONTO): What can I say? It's a stadium on the waterfront of a major North American city, downwind from an iconic world landmark and a couple blocks away from the fucking Hockey Hall of Fame. Anyone that can't find anything fun to do around the stadium is a fool. The sentiments I had for Madison Square Garden, I echo those sentiments with Toronto.
ROGERS ARENA (VANCOUVER): This area looks like a lot of fun. Gastown looks like a grand old time. There's a marina, several nightclubs and bars, and it just overall looks like I'd be entertained around these parts.
T-MOBILE ARENA (VEGAS): It's the fucking world-famous Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada. Get a clue. Next!
CAPITAL ONE ARENA (WASHINGTON): It's in Chinatown with lots to do and the US Capitol building is nearby. This looks like a prime location for a stadium. Kinda confusing to consider that this team once played in bumfuck Maryland.
BELL MTS PLACE (WINNIPEG): I know Winnipeg has a poor reputation for lacking in nightlife and activities, but I'm not seeing a whole lot outside of the stadium. A bar here, and restaurant there, which is odd considering the stadium is surrounded by buildings. I expected there to be a lot more and I'm just not seeing it.

A series of ideas to improve STW: The Mimic update
So STW is nowhere near as popular as BR, but that doesn't mean we should just give up on seeing this mode through! Leachers, traders, and more can be addressed with a few additions to the game. To best structure this article I made it in the form of an update, but sense this isn't real, I'm calling it the Mimic update.
NEW TRAPS:
These are some new tools players will start to collect post plankwood from llamas and occasionally from chests. AACannon: Only targets airborne enemies, so sheilders, takers, and flung husks will be shot down quickly. Smasher Bumper: This is a large wall like trap with spikes in front of it that can only be placed on metal and brick. It's key purpose is that it stops smashers in their tracks, should they be charging. Electro-grids: A wall trap that doesn't actually protect against husks, as they can walk through it. What it DOES stop is blaster beams, skulls, and other projectiles thrown by husks and misties. It's fairly cheap to produce as well.
NEW WEAPONS:
-The Bomb Bag: This is a unique schematic type one can earn now for all explosive types. Clingers, impulse grenades, m40s, they can now all be crafted in bulk with these schematics. They do require a lot of gunpowder though. -Flame weapons: Runs like an RPG where it has infinite ammo but its ammo comes from its durability. Can come in a flamethrower type weapon, or a launched shot of flame weapon. Increased damage against nature husks, lesser damage against water husks.
On the topic of Leachers
Why we have this problem is beyond me, as the solution seems simple. All we need to do is use the VERY stats we're given at the end of each game (combat, building, utility) to create a new stat: Participation percentage. If Larry spends the game mining resources, fighting husks, and doing objectives, he will have more combat, building, and utility under his belt by the end. When compared to Jennifer who leached the whole game, Jennifer is going to have a much lower participation percentage. All we have to do after that is deny rewards to players whos participation percentage falls too short. This also opens up the field to "100% effort" bonuses for solo missions.
Changes to Canny Valley and Twine Peaks
I do not know why both Canny and Twine still use the same generic map generation as plankerton and stonewood. Instead Canny should have a series of Arizona like cities and towns where large patches of desert reside outside and palm trees are littered elsewhere. The gimic of Canny and Twine is that you move from an area with high wood content to an area of high stone content. This doesn't mean they need to deny area types as well: City: A Dubai like area with tons of skyscrapers. Industrial Park: Same, just more construction zones and oil wells than buildings. Suburbs: Much more arid and dry with most houses looking like Walter Whites. Forests: This is the main difference, as now this zone needs to be changed to wilderness. In canny this is a mostly desert region with a few small buildings and mine shafts.
Likewise there can be a whole slew of new special areas like casinos, nuketowns, and monster truck yards.
Twine Peaks gets its own unique areas as well, but it's still stone centered. Cities: Now much more like towns at the bases of a few mountains. Industrial Zone: This is basically an "underground lab" type zone that's mid construction. There's plenty of bunkers and lots of construction sites boaring into the earth. Suburbs: Now much more like a ski resort atop a series of mountains with lodges and buildings dotted across the area. Wilderness: Just mountains and valleys with a lodge or mine shaft every here or there.
STORY:
I'm a bit hazy on the story right now and I'm finding it really hard to find answers to where the story goes. I can get the mission names but I can't actually find anything about where people are heading past plankerton. For this reason I'm simply going to create my own story following these events. *After fending off the storm from Twine Peaks, Ray turns her attention to two separate goal lines: Either establish a truly safe base of operations in Iron Archipelico, or Launch a full-scale attack on the storm in Gear Gulch. Each of these two areas can be progressed through simultaneously. Iron Archipelico is a series of islands out in the ocean. There's plenty of boats and treasure to find. By the end of the last storm shield defense (before the bonus ones) one unlocks a portal that grants access to the "Sky Station". Gear Gulch is a nice return to a grassy area with lots of hills, windmills, and large areas of real estate such as golf courses and mansions. Progress through here and ray finds key information on the mysterious history of the storm, and where it came from (however the actual result of this will be revealed in the update following this one) Sky Station is a space elevator, as one can expect, combat here is much different. Each map consists of a large area (about 1/2 of an entire map we have on any given mission) And instead we're given issues of verticality. Similar to the jump from plankerton to canny, this area is heavily reliant on metal as opposed to stone or wood. There are plenty of trees on observatory platforms and stone statues throughout the building. Storm defense: Unlike what one would expect, you start this journey on the top floor where you are actually in orbit. This stormbase has little gravity making combat unique to other areas. Each additional storm pylon is another floor down each time, with one actually being suspended in orbit on its own tethered satilite. Cities (Now command stations): These areas are super dense and can range in gravitational pull. Industrial zones: Always located near the top so low gravity. Suburbs (Now living quarters): Located anywhere throughout the building and ranges in gravity. Wilderness (now conservatory) : Always has plenty of wood and regular gravity. The bottom part of the tower is the focus of the mission, as that is currently undergoing a lot of husk attacks in an attempt to knock the tower over. Likewise these 3 new areas come with some new features as well:
New enemies:
Spider-Seaker: Mist monster: Jumps onto a players back and harms them, if one latches on, one is forced to remove it either through melee attacks, special abilities, or have a fellow player shoot it off. Tazzzzzer: Mist Monster: Works and looks like a slightly bigger shielder, but actively siphons off energy from players, and two can actually disable any given trap until removed. Calvary: Husk: Rides a boney stallion into players to push them back. Shoot down the horse and he's just another husk. (Smasher stoppers work on these guys too)
New Mission Types:
Sneaky: Starting in Gear Gulch, you will see the appearance of Reavers. Reavers do not attack structures and are infact blind. However they are also invincible. Missions with reavers will require one to take something or defend data in an area surrounded by reavers. They don't care much about construction noises, but will be drawn towards the sound of gunfire. Meaning players will need to rely on traps and their building skills to succeed here. If one does attract a reaver, they simply have to run away and hop on a hoverboard to lose their stalkers.
Battlestations
In iron archipelico, the husks appear to be getting smarter, and have actually developed a battleship to destroy your bases. The solution is simply to use a varriaty of missions specific traps (cannons) to combat the battleship from ones own fortress. Unlike most missions the solo versions of these will only have husks coming from the ship. In 4 player recommended mode, they will come from everywhere. So those are some of my ideas to build onto the game, what are your thoughts?
[Takeover] Insider Spring Training Guide: The Los Angeles Angels and Tempe Diablo Stadium
Introduction and Stadium Info
You may or may not have heard but Spring Training is rapidly approaching. As an Arizona resident and baseball fan, it is my favorite time of the year. Half of the baseball world is contained in the 45 mile stretch between Hohokam Stadium in Mesa and Surprise Stadium in The Most Inconveniently Located And Accessible Town Ever. Half of the Cactus League's 10 parks are within 15 minutes of each other. Of course, I don't have enough time or space to write up each ballpark here so I will focus on providing you all the information I know about my Angels' complex, Tempe Diablo Stadium. A Brief History The stadium is situated on the south side of Twin Butte and first saw Spring Training action in 1969 when it was home to the Seattle Pilots/Milwaukee Brewers for four seasons. In 1993, after 31 seasons in Palm Springs, the California Angels packed up and moved into Tempe Diablo Stadium. In the mid-2000's, the stadium underwent a wide $20M renovation and it was rededicated in 2006. The renovation was included in a new lease that will keep the Angels in Tempe through 2025. Practice Field and Stadium One of the main beauties of Spring Training - the ability to be up-close with the minor leaguers - is certainly seen in the backfields by Tempe Diablo Stadium. Like most Cactus League ballparks - the exceptions being Scottsdale Stadium (Giants) and Goodyear Ballpark (Reds/Indians) - the Angels minor league complex is also directly on-site. The 75 acre complex includes six full practice fields as well as a practice infield. During workouts in the weeks before Spring Training and into the exhibition season, the major leaguers will practice on the two fields closest to the stadium while the minor leaguers stay around the four adjacent fields and the minor league games are usually held on the north-east practice field of the four adjacent ones. As for the stadium itself, the dimensions of the park are: 340LF - 420CF - 360RF. The Angels list the capacity to be 9,315 but I have commonly seen posted attendance numbers over that. TL;DR: Four fields with MiLB players, two with MLB players, and an old but very functional ballpark with a lot of nostalgic Spring Training charm.
Game Day Info
Tickets The Angels use dynamic pricing to sell their tickets, so the prices will vary with demand. There are five regular ticket sections: Home Plate MVP, Field MVP, Field Box, Grandstand, and Lawn (G/A). The base prices for these sections with the dynamic pricing model - so assume regular demand - are $50, $40, $25, $20, $15. There are also All-You-Can-Eat Seats that run about $50. As for my advice, I would bullet point it as this:
Demand increases as the month goes on: if you don't mind ticket scalpers outside the stadium or secondary markets, prices will usually be much cheaper through them than at the box office for weekday games or games early in the month. If it's a weekend game or a popular opponent (Giants, Dodgers, Cubs), you're probably better off buying in advance from the team.
Don't buy seats in the Grandstand section: the seats are pretty far out and don't have a great sight-line. You're better off buying a lawn seat for less and sitting where you want which leads into my next point.
Don't buy All-You-Can-Eat Seats: $50 will buy you a ticket and a good meal after the game at a real restaurant.
If the possibility of not having an actual seat doesn't bother you, buy a lawn ticket: just buy something to get you into the door. The ushers are carefree and if you don't cause issues, they don't check tickets so scout for an open seat for a few innings and if no one comes, enjoy the game from there. This is usually a very solid bet for a weekday game.
Check StubHub: if you're planning on buying your tickets on game day through a scalper or at the gate, check StubHub the night before or the day of - sometimes people will be dumping a ticket at a low cost.
Lawn/berm: Extends from mid-way down the LF line to the hitters’ backdrop in left-center field. Of note, the visiting bullpen can be observed/heckled against the LF railing.
There is standing room available on the concourse and it can sometimes clog if it's hot out.
Mediocre park for shade: the last third rows from sections 10-22 (first base side) are in the shade for most or all of the game.
Autographs This is definitely the best park in the Cactus League for getting autographs. It's easiest if I post this diagram and then explain. The Angels players take BP on the practice field closest to the stadium and walk back along a pathway that is lined by a fence only about three feet (as seen in orange) in height and the majority of players will stop to sign for fans gathered there. Inside the stadium, the players will sometimes sign after their warm-ups along the LF and RF lines. If you are there when the visiting bus arrives, you can camp along this four foot wall (red circle) by the east parking lot where you can try your luck. Food Outside food isn't allowed in the stadium but water is. I feel like I've brought in my own food before and nothing was said, but do it at your own risk. This isn't the greatest ballpark for food options either - that would be Salt River Fields - however there are a few decent options. Aside from your standard hot dogs/nachos/peanuts/pretzels fare - hey, that may be all you want - there some food tents out by the berm in left field. There you can get street tacos, barbecued beef/chicken/pork, and hamburgers. There is also a covered pavilion at the end of concourse on the right field side with a grill and picnic tables. And, yes, like every other Cactus League park, there are some Angelo's Italian Ice stands. I'd say just eat something before you go and maybe get a sorbet from the Angelo's stand around the 6th inning. That always hits the spot. Parking The soon-to-be formerly best kept secret about Tempe Diablo Stadium is the free street parking. You can pay $5 to park in one of the lots next to the stadium or if you arrive I'd say about an hour before game-time, you can pretty easily find free street parking just to the south of the stadium. I would suggest to try and not arrive at game-time anyway because the area around the stadium can get a little congested and parking is limited. Definitely arrive early if it's a weekend game or premier matchup. There is also a trolley that runs for free from Mill Ave to Tempe Diablo Stadium and Cubs Park. Other Notes
The video board meets the minimum requirements for it to still be legally called a video board.
The Angels bullpen is out of the sight of fans and behind the RF wall.
Gates open at 11:30am for a 1:05pm game.
TL;DR: Arrive moderately early to avoid traffic (it's like still being in LA/OC), eat before you go, and bum a seat on the first base side with a lawn ticket.
Around the Park
Things to Do The ballpark has a great location. Though it's not located in the heart of Old Town Scottsdale like Scottsdale Stadium, there is still a lot to do around the park. There are three malls within seven miles of the stadium and the famous Mill Avenue District. It is very closely located to the airport and the Phoenix Zoo is also close by. There is a casino on the Salt River Pima–Maricopa Indian Community within 15 minutes. Old Town Scottsdale and Scottsdale Fashion Square (where ESPN broadcasted their recent Super Bowl coverage from) is also about a 15 minute drive. If you wish to channel your inner April Ludgate, there is also a historic cemetery on the north-west side of the butte that the stadium is built on. Places to Eat There are also several great restaurants around the stadium. I would simply recommend this guide, the best I've seen, if you're planning on visiting Arizona at all for Spring Training. As for specifically Tempe Diablo, most anywhere listed under the "Scottsdale/Old Town," "Tempe," or "Mesa" headings would be within 15 minutes of the stadium. I would also add Little Miss BBQ to that list if I were writing it. Well, i’ve got bad news for you: sold out. Not really, but use this guide to help you plan your trip and get the most out of your trip to the desert. So, how do I get to the city in the middle of the desert that somebody named Phoenix? There are a variety of ways to get into Phoenix:
Food near the stadium: Westgate Entertainment District is just north of University of Phoenix Stadium (easy walking distance), and holds several restaurants and places to have a drink. The good: Yard House. A touch on the pricey side, but great above-average quality pub food and classier entrees. Huge selection of beer. Tough to get a table on gameday. Whiskey Rose. Sports bar atmosphere with slightly country aesthetic. Not much in the way of beer choices, but good gameday specials and solid appetizers. Really cute waitresses. Saddle Ranch. Lots of soccer moms cutting loose on the weekends. Decent food, okay beers and highly-country atmosphere. Decent enough if you can ignore the music. Hell's Half Acre. Good selection of beer, waitresses dance on poles, good gameday specials on shots and beers. Busy on gameday. Country/Metal atmosphere. Bar Louie. Pretty standard fare. Decent back-up if the wait for Yard House is too long. Mama Gina's. Decent pizza and Italian fare. A little too heavy for gameday in my opinion, but a decent enough, family-friendly atmosphere if you're bringing the kids. Salt Taco y Tequila. More upper-class than Calico Jacks (see below), with solid margarita selection. Less a place to grab a quick bite and more of a sit-down atmosphere. Good food. The bad: Calico Jacks. Shitty beer selection, rushed wait staff and average-at-best Mexican food. Avoid it on the weekends, as it turns into a loud, crowded dance club. McFadden's. Also, according to u/cardinals1996, McFadden's has been known to steal their customer's credit card information. Alright, I know how to get there, where to stay, and where to eat. So, where can I buy my tickets? Hint: Buy them in advance. A few of them are quite a bit more than just a casino. Talking Stick Resort and Wildhorse Resort are my favorites. Talking Stick also has a pretty good golf course. For anyone that hasn't been to a game before, please PLEASE know that they will not allow any purses inside the stadium. The only ones they allow are clear ones. My girlfriend basically uses what I call a big wallet when we go. Anyway, you will have to walk back to your car (odds are that'll be a long ass walk btw) and leave it there.

Aisle Policy- Policy that states fans returning from food area, restrooms, etc., should wait for on-field play to end before returning to their seats to maximize the enjoyment for all fans. this policy is also referred to as "Wait For The Whistle."
No Pets- Only service/guide/signal animals will be allowed to enter the stadium
Bag Policy (READ THIS): In accordance with the NFL’s Public Safety Policy, fans can bring one of the following approved bags inside University of Phoenix Stadium: 12” x 6” x 12” clear plastic bag, or; 1-Gallon Plastic Freezer Bag, or; Small Clutch bad no larger than 4.5” x 6.5” in size. Fans should be prepared to open their bags for inspection and may be asked by security staff to shift and possibly remove the contents. Non-approved bags will be denied entry into the stadium and fans will be asked to return the bag to their vehicle or dispose of it. There are no lockers outside of the stadium to store items nor can any items be held by staff members.
Restrooms- There are 50 restrooms in the stadium, and most are clearly marked
Smoking- In accordance with the Smoke-Free Arizona Act, University of Phoenix Stadium is a non-smoking facility. There are three designated smoking locations on the main concourse located beyond the Gate 2 exterior gate and outside the exit doors at Sections 102 and 137. Fans on the Club level, Loft corridor and terrace level can proceed to the designated smoking locations on the north ramp. Please remember to the keep the north ramp walk aisles clear for other fans and smoke only in the designated areas. Fans outside the stadium are reminded that they must be at least 20 feet away from any stadium entrance to smoke. E-cigarettes are not permitted inside University of Phoenix Stadium. Fans that do not comply with the smoking policy inside the stadium are subject to ejection.

Non-approved bags will be denied entry into the stadium and fans will be asked to return the bag to their vehicle or dispose of it. There are no lockers outside of the stadium to store items nor can any items be held by staff members.
Restrooms- There are 50 restrooms in the stadium, and most are clearly marked
Smoking- In accordance with the Smoke-Free Arizona Act, University of Phoenix Stadium is a non-smoking facility. There are three designated smoking locations on the main concourse located beyond the Gate 2 exterior gate and outside the exit doors at Sections 102 and 137. Fans on the Club level, Loft corridor and terrace level can proceed to the designated smoking locations on the north ramp. Please remember to the keep the north ramp walk aisles clear for other fans and smoke only in the designated areas. Fans outside the stadium are reminded that they must be at least 20 feet away from any stadium entrance to smoke. E-cigarettes are not permitted inside University of Phoenix Stadium. Fans that do not comply with the smoking policy inside the stadium are subject to ejection.
Make sure to read the guide for more information on basic rules for the stadium. Where do I tailgate before the game? The Great Lawn is a great place to tailgate pre-game. You may or may not have heard but Spring Training is rapidly approaching. As an Arizona resident and baseball fan, it is my favorite time of the year. Half of the baseball world is contained in the 45 mile stretch between Hohokam Stadium in Mesa and Surprise Stadium in The Most Inconveniently Located And Accessible Town Ever. Half of the Cactus League's 10 parks are within 15 minutes of each other. Of course, I don't have enough time or space to write up each ballpark here so I will focus on providing you all the information I know about my Angels' complex, Tempe Diablo Stadium. A Brief History The stadium is situated on the south side of Twin Butte and first saw Spring Training action in 1969 when it was home to the Seattle Pilots/Milwaukee Brewers for four seasons. In 1993, after 31 seasons in Palm Springs, the California Angels packed up and moved into Tempe Diablo Stadium. In the mid-2000's, the stadium underwent a wide $20M renovation and it was rededicated in 2006. The renovation was included in a new lease that will keep the Angels in Tempe through 2025. Practice Field and Stadium One of the main beauties of Spring Training - the ability to be up-close with the minor leaguers - is certainly seen in the backfields by Tempe Diablo Stadium. Like most Cactus League ballparks - the exceptions being Scottsdale Stadium (Giants) and Goodyear Ballpark (Reds/Indians) - the Angels minor league complex is also directly on-site. The 75 acre complex includes six full practice fields as well as a practice infield. During workouts in the weeks before Spring Training and into the exhibition season, the major leaguers will practice on the two fields closest to the stadium while the minor leaguers stay around the four adjacent fields and the minor league games are usually held on the north-east practice field of the four adjacent ones. As for the stadium itself, the dimensions of the park are: 340LF - 420CF - 360RF. The Angels list the capacity to be 9,315 but I have commonly seen posted attendance numbers over that. TL;DR: Four fields with MiLB players, two with MLB players, and an old but very functional ballpark with a lot of nostalgic Spring Training charm.
Game Day Info
Tickets The Angels use dynamic pricing to sell their tickets, so the prices will vary with demand. There are five regular ticket sections: Home Plate MVP, Field MVP, Field Box, Grandstand, and Lawn (G/A). The base prices for these sections with the dynamic pricing model - so assume regular demand - are $50, $40, $25, $20, $15. There are also All-You-Can-Eat Seats that run about $50. As for my advice, I would bullet point it as this:
Demand increases as the month goes on: if you don't mind ticket scalpers outside the stadium or secondary markets, prices will usually be much cheaper through them than at the box office for weekday games or games early in the month. If it's a weekend game or a popular opponent (Giants, Dodgers, Cubs), you're probably better off buying in advance from the team.
Don't buy seats in the Grandstand section: the seats are pretty far out and don't have a great sight-line. You're better off buying a lawn seat for less and sitting where you want which leads into my next point.
Don't buy All-You-Can-Eat Seats: $50 will buy you a ticket and a good meal after the game at a real restaurant.
If the possibility of not having an actual seat doesn't bother you, buy a lawn ticket: just buy something to get you into the door. The ushers are carefree and if you don't cause issues, they don't check tickets so scout for an open seat for a few innings and if no one comes, enjoy the game from there. This is usually a very solid bet for a weekday game.
Check StubHub: if you're planning on buying your tickets on game day through a scalper or at the gate, check StubHub the night before or the day of - sometimes people will be dumping a ticket at a low cost.
Lawn/berm: Extends from mid-way down the LF line to the hitters’ backdrop in left-center field. Of note, the visiting bullpen can be observed/heckled against the LF railing.
There is standing room available on the concourse and it can sometimes clog if it's hot out.
Mediocre park for shade: the last third rows from sections 10-22 (first base side) are in the shade for most or all of the game.
Autographs This is definitely the best park in the Cactus League for getting autographs. It's easiest if I post this diagram and then explain. The Angels players take BP on the practice field closest to the stadium and walk back along a pathway that is lined by a fence only about three feet (as seen in orange) in height and the majority of players will stop to sign for fans gathered there. Inside the stadium, the players will sometimes sign after their warm-ups along the LF and RF lines. If you are there when the visiting bus arrives, you can camp along this four foot wall (red circle) by the east parking lot where you can try your luck. Food Outside food isn't allowed in the stadium but water is. I feel like I've brought in my own food before and nothing was said, but do it at your own risk. This isn't the greatest ballpark for food options either - that would be Salt River Fields - however there are a few decent options. Aside from your standard hot dogs/nachos/peanuts/pretzels fare - hey, that may be all you want - there some food tents out by the berm in left field. There you can get street tacos, barbecued beef/chicken/pork, and hamburgers. There is also a covered pavilion at the end of concourse on the right field side with a grill and picnic tables. And, yes, like every other Cactus League park, there are some Angelo's Italian Ice stands. I'd say just eat something before you go and maybe get a sorbet from the Angelo's stand around the 6th inning. That always hits the spot. Parking The soon-to-be formerly best kept secret about Tempe Diablo Stadium is the free street parking. You can pay $5 to park in one of the lots next to the stadium or if you arrive I'd say about an hour before game-time, you can pretty easily find free street parking just to the south of the stadium. I would suggest to try and not arrive at game-time anyway because the area around the stadium can get a little congested and parking is limited. Definitely arrive early if it's a weekend game or premier matchup. There is also a trolley that runs for free from Mill Ave to Tempe Diablo Stadium and Cubs Park. Other Notes
The video board meets the minimum requirements for it to still be legally called a video board.
The Angels bullpen is out of the sight of fans and behind the RF wall.
Gates open at 11:30am for a 1:05pm game.
TL;DR: Arrive moderately early to avoid traffic (it's like still being in LA/OC), eat before you go, and bum a seat on the first base side with a lawn ticket.
Around the Park
Things to Do The ballpark has a great location. Though it's not located in the heart of Old Town Scottsdale like Scottsdale Stadium, there is still a lot to do around the park. There are three malls within seven miles of the stadium and the famous Mill Avenue District. It is very closely located to the airport and the Phoenix Zoo is also close by. There is a casino on the Salt River Pima–Maricopa Indian Community within 15 minutes. Old Town Scottsdale and Scottsdale Fashion Square (where ESPN broadcasted their recent Super Bowl coverage from) is also about a 15 minute drive. If you wish to channel your inner April Ludgate, there is also a historic cemetery on the north-west side of the butte that the stadium is built on. Places to Eat There are also several great restaurants around the stadium. I would simply recommend this guide, the best I've seen, if you're planning on visiting Arizona at all for Spring Training. As for specifically Tempe Diablo, most anywhere listed under the "Scottsdale/Old Town," "Tempe," or "Mesa" headings would be within 15 minutes of the stadium. I would also add Little Miss BBQ to that list if I were writing it.
